Ch Lapchums Steppin' Out with Doris Burnage
|
Doris BurnagePassed 21/10/2002 aged 96 "Chatsworth Chinchillas"
Doris was devoted to the cat fancy. She was a founding member of the RAS Cat Control (RASCC) now known as the New South Wales Cat Fanciers' Association Inc (NSW CFA). Doris served as a member of the clubs management committee for fifty years before she retired from Service. She was an experienced All Breeds Judge known Australia wide. To quote our very own Truda M Straede "behind her she leaves many memories of warmth, enthusiasm and common sense, the hallmark of the great lady that she was." |
|||
Memories of DorisLyn, Paul and myself had stewarded for Doris many times and she was such an informative person - she told us so many things, taught us so much about the world of cats and even, when I had given myself a "radical hairdo", told me off ... she called me "her little gypsy girl" from then on in. Yes, memories - good memories .... of a great and lovely lady. Vale Doris ....... Julie, Paul and Lyn
Oh this really twisted my heart, Doris was such a
friend and champion of both me and the Australian Mist. I have
definitely lost a real friend, whose friendship was always
appreciated not least because Doris' shrewdness and wit never
deserted her, both praise and blame being apportioned where they
were due. She was a Mentor indeed, to not only myself, but to
generations of breeders both before and after me, and the cat
fancy itself. Maybe it was the worst thing Doris ever did, but she gave me such support and encouragement as a teenager that I didn't get bored with the cat fancy and go off to other things. My surrogate auntie. Oh, the things she imparted! Started with silver persians and we moved on from there. So many school holidays spent with she and Cyril, poring over pedigrees and absorbing the anecdotal history of cats in Oz, Doris style..... the last time we talked was when I was en route to NZ for the last show I did there, and she was in hospital. We went on for ages and ages.... God, I wish everyone had been able to experience Doris! Without getting maudlin (she would have hated that) I would somehow like to convey to those who didn't know her very much that today marks the passing of possibly the last absolute grande dame of the Aust cat fancy - someone to whom many of us owe so much. .... Lloyd CherryPassed May 2008 "Colissa Siamese, Burmese Devon Rex and Abyssinians"
In Llods own words...
"My introduction to the world of show cats came on 21st November 1969 with the birth of my first pedigreed cat, a Seal Point Siamese, Robinhill Coca Cola. From a judge's view, she was awful, but as they say, beauty is in the eye.... Next came a rather nice little Brown Burmese Coorumbeena Prittim. My breeder's prefix COLISSA was registered in August 1970 My eye for selecting breeding stock improved over the years and with the assistance of Zoe Jermyn of Sarayan fame, my Siamese started doing nice things on the bench (Like taking thirteen major specials in one ring at a Tasmanian Cat Club show - quite embarrassing actually!) and Colissa was starting to make an impact. In 1975 I imported a pair of Devon Rex from Alison Ashford in the UK and my breeding introduced Devon Rex to New South Wales with the first two Devons in that state going to Eula Cross and Joy Jeffries (now Bambi-Joy Edwards). The loss of my boy curtailed breeding Devons as I had neither a suitable male to continue, nor the money to re-import. Turning to coloured Burmese, I produced many a head-turning Cream & Tortie from the first "other coloured" import into Australia, a delightful Cream Gd Ch Kupro Cream Kirsch (Imp UK) who was also a real show-off and quite known for his somersaults on camera. I think that my first love really is the Aby and with the assistance of Aimee Smart from Western Australia and her wealth of American and English imports, my Abyssinians started to make a real impact on the Tasmanian show scene. Arguably the finest Aby ever to grace the Tasmanian show bench was Gd Ch Absin Howzat, or probable better known throughout the Aby world as "Horace". Horace won Kitten of the Year and Cat of the year in his first year (1983) He was virtually unbeaten until his retirement in 1986 and towards the end of his show career he only appeared when it became necessary to prove a point. Two or three quick shows then back into mothballs usually did the job nicely. A major change in my life saw me retire from breeding in 1987 and I now occupy myself with show administration at club and council level. I commenced judge training on 23rd February 1975 and on 24th June 1976, my senior licence to judge Siamese was endorsed by the Cat Control Council of Tasmania. I was licensed to judge Other Foreign Shorthair in 1978. My listing on the ACF national judges panel was confirmed on 15th July 1980. January 1989 saw the introduction of "Group" judging in Tasmania and as British was added to Group 3 from a "Longhair Licence", I virtually became unlicensed to judge all Group 3, although only one of three in the state licensed to judge OFS. It was deemed that I complete the required course, and on 12th April 1991 saw me add British Shorthair to an otherwise "All Shorthair" licence to now be able to judge Group 3 as well as Group 2. For personal reasons, I suspended Group 1 training during the practical assignment stages until the formation in February 1995 of the new Cat Control Council Inc, when I applied to continue training. My Senior All-Breeds licence was endorsed on Friday 16th April 1999. It has been a long hard road from the first Siamese lecture in 1975. I have judged extensively throughout Tasmania, and in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, and Auckland My application to the Australian Cat Federation to be endorsed as an "International Judge" was acknowledged on 14th July 1994, but official whatever prevented this listing from becoming effective before the division in Tasmania and my subsequent listing with the Co-ordinating Cat Council of Australia. I was appointed as a Tutor Judge on 9th September 1989 and currently hold the position of Chairman of the Judge Tutor Panel of our council. I joined the Cat Fanciers' Club of Tasmania in 1970 and over the next 17 years held the position of President (12 years) or Vice President continuously. I resigned from committee in 1987. I am an Honorary Life Member of that club." |

Enid Cummings Passed 6th June
2004
Enid was a stalwart of the Cat Fancy in NSW for
over a half a century. She had a family involvement that
spanned three generations starting with her mother Mrs Lee who
was involved in the Cat fancy for many years. Now the
interest has passed to Enid's daughter Coral.
As a NSWCFA judge, Enid judged extensively and in
many places during her judging career. She was well
known to many as a breeder of Persians, Exotics and British
Shorthairs. She bred under the Binnari prefix.
Memories of EnidI was saddened to hear of Enid's passing,
she was a lovely person and always had a good sense of
humour. Enid rest well. She has now gone to join all
the other greats of the cat fancy.

GD CH Meglee Shaddo Amour |
Meg Leeson29.10.1918 – 5.5.1999 "Meglee Cattery"
This tribute was provided by Carol MacLeod
Meg Leeson was a well-respected breeder and a founding member of the Illawarra Pedigree Cat Fancy Inc in late 1964. When she moved from Queensland to the Wollongong area she brought with her a pregnant white Persian female cat. She purchased a registered Shaded Silver Persian male upon her arrival in Wollongong. When she advertised her first litter for sale, another breeder in the area approached Meg, saw her lovely Shaded Silver Male, and suggested she show him. From this initial contact Meg became a registered breeder of Persians in a variety of colours but in later years specialised in the Chinchilla and Shaded Silver colours. Her prefix, Meglee, was approved on 23 July 1964. Meg was a registered breeder for 34 years and retired in early 1998 after suffering her first heart attack. Meg was the last of the founding members of the Illawarra Pedigree Cat Fancy Inc. |
|||
|
Meg served in various positions on the Committee of the Club for many years and retired as President in 1998. She was also Show Secretary on numerous occasions. Meg was also a well-respected steward, obtaining the Steward Classes Certificate in 1977. During Meg’s show career she had many successes with both cats she bred and owned. Her most outstanding being GD CH Meglee Shaddo Amour who was Kitten of the Year in 1975 and Cat of the Year in both 1976 and 1977 and had 20 Best in Show wins. She won Cat of the Year on two other occasions; in 1974 with CH Ma Cherie Petite Chou (Imp NZ) and in 1983 with GD CH Meglee Shaddo Rani. Meg helped many breeders get started by selling them their first breeding queen or stud cat as well as letting them use her males for stud service. Many people from all over Australia knew Meg and have expressed their sorrow at her passing. As many people have said to me, “with Meg’s passing it was truly the end of an era”. Fortunately, her legacy will live on in the cats she has bred. |

all self coloured Persians, Chinchillas, Blue-Creams and
Tortoiseshells. Shirley enjoyed many successes with Harry
over the years breeding many Best In Show winners with both
males and females, cats and kittens.

Robin, always smiling with a beloved Burmese |
Robin Moller30/1/1937-15/2/2004 "Hindmarsh" Burmillas"
This tribute was provided by Yvonne Curran
Robin Moller bred beautiful Burmese cats for over thirty years. She also had boarding cats from time to time and had many show ribbons from her successes on the show bench hanging in her "office" Just like many cat breeders she also had a passion for horses and used to compete in horse and harness racing events. She still had a hand made sulky in the garage all covered up from her horse days. Her son's lived in overseas in America so her cats became her life here in Australia. Robin didn't go to every show in the latter years as the Burmese type changed many of her cats were of the older style. Her cats had beautiful temperament. Robin felt temperament was vital and more important than a top show winner. She was a beautiful lady and no one helped me like she did. Not every one is willing to help new breeders but Robin was. It was in her nature to give. |
|||
|
She was one of the very first in Australia to breed the Burmilla. In 1995 Robin applied and was accepted to breed Burmillas. Her first litter was born in January 1996. Her dedication and hard work was realised when five years later, together with Margaret Klaver, Robin presented the first 4th generation litters to the NSW CFA Management Committee for assessment by three committee members. the members were group three judges and full register status was achieved. I still have two of her Burmese here, one that I bred for her. She is holding it in the photo on the left. It was taken the day she came to pick the kitten up. When Robin first became ill her breeder friends took her cats to mind or lease. Unfortunately, when she realised she wasn't coming home to her beloved cats we were allowed to keep the cats we had if we wished. it was sad but they keep her memory alive. I kept her brown Burmese girl and lilac Burmese stud as well as two of her Burmillas. One did not cope well with birthing and feeding her kittens and I missed having Robin to help guide and advise me. She taught me all I know about Burmese. I miss her dearly. |

Ashley NoonanPassed 18 September 2006 "Mellusika Siamese, Foreign White & Oriental" Ashley was very well known in the cat fancy in South Australia and she bred some lovely cats under the Mellusika prefix - probably one of the best known in recent years being Mellusika Snow Cloud, a Foreign White who won the ACF Award of Excellence when she was a Bronze Double Grand Champion. Her work with Feline Association of South Australia covered many years and many aspects and she will be sorely missed by all at FASA and GCCFSA. She passed away peacefully on her 62nd Birthday surrounded by her family and friends. |

Kay PaulingPassed 17/4/2006 "Sikander Birmans"
Kay Pauling has lost her long and brave battle with cancer. Held in the highest esteem by her club, NSW CFA, she attended the Royal Easter Show days before passing, a sign of her devotion to the cat fancy and her beautiful Birmans. Debra RausPassed Sept 2007 "Dejavu Birmans"
After a short but fierce battle with
cancer Debbie left us at far too young an age...and so much
wisdom and caring went with her.
Debbie bred some beautiful Birmans
under the prefix Dejavu - probably the most successful being
Gold Champion Dejavu Hershey. She is sadly missed from the
Birman Breeders fraternity. She was a quiet achiever, steady and
companionable with those who shared her love and worked closely
with B.K. Heather of Sharada Birmans sharing ownership of some
beautiful cats.
Just a month or two before she
passed Debbie was able to attend the CCCofA Nationals in
Melbourne and was there to see three of her beloved cats achieve
a Best Adult in Group and Reserve Adult in Group as well as
several Top 10 placings. Her cats have been placed in loving pet
homes but many of their kittens now grace the catteries of other
Birman Breeders.... |

Deslie WardPassed February 2006 "Amaya Himalayans and Persians" Deslie was a breeder of beautiful Silvers and Himalayans breeding under the Amaya prefix. Prior to her joining the Feline Control Council of Victoria (FCCV) a number of years ago, she had lived in NSW where she was a breeder registered with the then Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RASCC) and a regular exhibitor. Deslie was known for her lovely Pointed Persians and Silvers. |
